Mounts Bay could face their landlords Cornish Pirates in the quarter-finals of the National Trophy after Monday's draw was made. Bay, who play at the Pirates' Mennaye Field home, will host the match on Saturday, 28 February if the National One side beat Nottingham. Pirates' fifth round tie at Meadow Lane was postponed last Friday after heavy snow in the East Midlands. The Pirates will play the rearranged game at Nottingham this Sunday. The news was greeted with joy by Bay head coach Adrian Bick, who was hoping to draw a big side in the last eight after beating London Scottish 6-5 at the Mennaye on Saturday. "We were kind of hoping for one of the big clubs away, but if you're going to get a big club at home you're best to have the Pirates as their fans won't have far to travel," Bick said. | We pay to use the field, but will we have to pay the use the field when we play the Pirates? |
"We've never played them in a competitive fixture," he told BBC Cornwall. "We've trained against one another and it's been very useful for both teams," he added. Bay's Mennaye Field home is still owned by Penzance & Newlyn RFC, who left the Mennaye at the end of the 2004-05 season after they changed the name of their first team to Cornish Pirates. They now play at Camborne in an attempt to broaden their fan base across the entire county. "I wonder if we'll have to pay them rent that day," Bick mused. "We pay to use the field, but will we have to pay the use the field when we play the Pirates?" | 606: DEBATE |
But the Pirates still have to beat Nottingham in the last 16, after the match between the two at Meadow Lane fell victim to the snow on Sunday. "We're concentrating on getting a win at Nottingham first," said Phil Westren from the Pirates. "The bottom line is that we've got a difficult time away to Nottingham who are very good before we can think about Mounts Bay," Westren added.
