Squad changes at Cornish Pirates

Cornish Pirates have signed back row forward Blair Cowan and released Samoan international fly-half Doug Sanft and South African lock Bruce Cumming.

The 22-year-old New Zealander will be in the squad for Sunday's National Trophy game as the Pirates pack continues to suffer from injuries.

Lock Cumming, 28, has failed to recover from a dislocated shoulder he suffered in November.

Sanft, 29, was signed in the summer but failed to make an impact at the club.

The Samoan came in for criticism from head coach Mark Hewitt earlier in the season and was sent out on loan to Mounts Bay last month.

Cowan has captained the Wellington 'B' side and was recommended to the club by former coach Chris Stirling.

"After spending time with the Pirates and understanding both the Pirates style and the league I can confidently say that Blair will be an important addition to the squad," Stirling said.

"He will bring high levels of skill and game understanding, coupled with a huge work rate and a very tough approach to every aspect of play - Blair will be a great asset to the club."
