Jannie Bornman has not been given a new visa (Cornish Pirates)

Cornish Pirates will not be able to sign Jannie Bornman from Plymouth Albion after the South African back row forward was refused a new visa.

Changes to the work permit and visa laws have halted the deal.

"He informed us that he would have no difficulties in complying with the various rules and regulations," Pirates CEO Ron Coward told the club website.

"Jannie gave this assurance in good faith and it was only later that he learned that he could have a problem."

Bornman was set to be a ready-made replacement for Pirates captain Tim Cowley, who is joining French side Bourgoin.

The club say they have examined every avenue to try and obtain the necessary permissions to allow Bornman to stay in the country but they have been unable to secure his signing.

"Jannie has been trying hard to find a solution that would allow him to become a Pirates player," said Coward.

"We consider him to be a fine player who would have excelled playing for the Pirates and we wish him every success in his future career.

"Our supporters can be confident that whoever takes his place will not be a less talented or influential player."

Bornman is now expected to ply his trade in the French league from next season.
