Johns retired from the game in 2007 at the age of 32 while at Newcastle Knights
Warrington Wolves are to welcome back former half-back Andrew Johns in January to assist with their pre-season training programme. Johns only played three times for the Wolves in 2005, but is considered one the best players of his generation. "I had a fabulous time when I played for the Wolves," said the Australian. "My debut against Leeds at The Halliwell Jones Stadium remains one of my personal highlights. The boys really put up their hands that day." The former Australia international will visit Warrington for two weeks at the start of 2010 to assist Wolves boss Tony Smith and his team in a range of coaching areas. | 606: DEBATE FrommersGuideToBritain2013 |
He will focus on skills coaching, a role that he currently has with several NRL clubs, and will assist with other duties as well. Johns has been watching Warrington's progress from afar and he was delighted to see the Wolves win the Challenge Cup this season. "I stayed up late in Sydney to watch the match and I was pumped to see the boys win," he continued. "Giving that it was the Wolves' first appearance in a final for 19 years the 25-16 win over the Huddersfield Giants before a full house at Wembley must have brought great joy the club's supporters and, of course, the team. | The insight he can give on the game as a whole will be fantastic for all concerned Warrington coach Tony Smith on Andrew Johns' arrival |
"Knowing that they had to beat Wigan in the semis to make the final was a real test for their character." And Warrington coach Tony Smith is looking forward to seeing what Johns can bring to the camp. "To have a world-class player of his calibre will be incredibly beneficial to the whole squad, particularly the half-backs," said Smith. "The insight he can give on the game as a whole will be fantastic for all concerned - coaches and players alike. "He is very experienced in passing on his knowledge - having done so in Australia he is well versed in passing on what helped him become the champion he was and the rugby league icon he is." The club will also be hosting a sportsman's dinner during Johns time in the North West, with the former Newcastle Knights player being the guest of honour.
