Mark Calderwood ran in six tries in 19 Super League matches for Hull FC |
Super League hopefuls Harlequins have taken winger Mark Calderwood on trial following his release by Hull FC at the end of last season. The 29-year-old former Leeds, Wigan, Hull and England winger will stay with Rob Powell's Quins initially until the end of February. "We're delighted to have him on board," said coach Powell. "We need strength in our outside backs. Mark is a great fit. "He has a wealth of experience and a proven track record to score tries." Having been born in the capital, Calderwood, who has represented Yorkshire and England and is also eligible for Jamaica and the West Indies, could add to Harlequins RL's roster of London players. Although starved of tries in his two-year, injury-hit stay with Hull, making just four appearances last season due to recurring hamstring problems, Calderwood still boasts one of Super League's most prolific scoring records. He finished top of the try-scoring charts at Leeds in 2002, 2003, helped Leeds to the title in 2004, and was the top Super League try scorer in 2005, with 27. Injuries meant that he failed to repeat his success at Headingley following moves to Wigan, for the 2006 season, and Hull, in 2009. But he still did enough to be selected for England and is now looking to re-ignite his career in London. "I would like to give Mark the opportunities to show the quality he has in the past," said Powell. "I know he could be a great addition. I look forward to seeing him in action and adding another dimension to what we currently have."
