Hull KR give Cooke second chance

Troubled Paul Cooke has reconciled his differences with Hull KR after he was dropped for disciplinary reasons.

Rovers coach Justin Morgan had said Cooke would have to make significant lifestyle changes if he wanted to remain with the Super League club.

"I accept that my off-field behaviour has been unprofessional and have apologised to those concerned for that," said the England international.

Cooke could feature for Rovers against Harlequins on Sunday.

The agreement brings a turbulent two weeks to an end following Cooke's axing before the 44-18 local derby defeat by Hull FC on 20 July.

He subsequently missed the 30-16 victory over Catalans Dragons at Craven Park last week.

Paul particularly impressed me by showing a strong and genuine determination to make up for lost time

But following a meeting with Morgan and club chairman Neil Hudgell, Cooke insists he will not waste a second chance.

"I would also like to extend that apology to the supporters who have been tremendous since my arrival at the club," he said in a statement.

Morgan had been particularly forthright about Cooke's future when questioned after the Catalans match, insisting Cooke was "not in a good enough state to take his place in the team".

But the Australian now says the 27-year-old has a key role to play in Rovers' push for a play-off place.

"The meeting was very positive and Paul particularly impressed me by showing a strong and genuine determination to make up for lost time and to get back to recapturing his best form," said Morgan.

"Whilst we will monitor the situation carefully, I expect Paul to play an important part for us between now and the end of the season and for the remainder of his contract."

Cooke still has two-and-a-half years left on his deal after controversially joining the club he supported as a boy from local rivals Hull.

He served a six-game ban at the beginning of the season after being found guilty of approaching the Red and Whites while still under contract at the KC Stadium.

The former England international was recently banned from driving for 16 months after being found over the legal limit for alcohol.
