Saints suffered a massive second-half scare before Ade Gardner's late try broke Warrington's hearts.

A Lee Gilmour brace and further tries by Gardner and Vinnie Anderson put Saints on top after Michael Sullivan had scored for Warrington.

But scores by Richie Barnett, Henry Fa'afili and a penalty try put the Wolves back in contention.

Late on, with Warrington inches from a levelling try, Gardner intercepted and ran the length of the pitch to score.

Sullivan gave the Wolves an early lead when he burrowed over to score, but Gilmour soon touched down twice, once from a towering Sean Long kick, to put Saints ahead.

Gardner and Anderson scored shortly before the break to give the home side a 26-4 interval lead, but Warrington struck back early in the second half.

Fa'afili touched down after a good passing move, before Mike Wainwright and Brent Grose combined to put Barnett over.

A penalty try was awarded when Leon Pryce impeded Barnett as he tried to go over for another.

But a Lyon penalty and Gardner's late intervention dashed any hope of a Warrington win and a second successive defeat for Saints.

  • St Helens coach Daniel Anderson:
"Sometimes you've got to look into the mirror when things don't go your way and I don't think we've played well as a team for a few weeks.

"We got stung last week but tonight was a team performance and I was really proud of the players.

"I was very excited and proud by some of our performance."

  • Warrington head coach Paul Cullen:
"We'll take a lot of confidence from that performance and I thought the second half was outstanding.

"To be that far behind at half-time (26-4) and come back the way we did takes some doing.

"We're very disappointed in the dressing room with our discipline lapses that cost us in the first half."
