Lyon's Origin hopes are 'remote'
Jamie Lyon on the attack for Saints
Lyon was last year's Man of Steel
St Helens centre Jamie Lyon's chances of playing in the State of Origin series in Australia look remote.

A New South Wales player shortage has prompted speculation that Lyon might be called up for the three-match series.

The Australian, last year's Super League Man of Steel, is keen to play if he can get special permission.

Australian Rugby League boss Geoff Carr said it was "highly, highly improbable" Lyon would be drafted in, while Saints say they have not been approached.

Lyon's name has been mentioned by NSW coach Graham Murray as a contender for the five-eighth spot following Trent Barrett's retirement from representative matches.

We've always left it up to the selectors but the general rule is that they support the NRL players
ARL chief Geoff Carr

Lyon, who is currently negotiating a return to the NRL next season, played the last of his five Origin matches nearly three years ago and admitted he would love to play.

"I'd be delighted to be considered for selection," said Lyon, who is the second-highest scorer in Super League this season with 106 points.

"I would really love to play in the Origin series this year," added the centre, who may return to action on Friday following an eye infection.

There is a precedent, with Allan Langer allowed to play for Queensland in the State of Origin decider in 2001 during a spell with Warrington, but Carr insisted that was a one-off.

"We've always left it up to the selectors, but the general rule is that they support the NRL players," said Carr.

"Alfie Langer came back, but that was an exception."

Meanwhile, 2005 world player of the year Anthony Minichiello is likely to miss the series because of a back injury.

Minichiello is facing surgery and if he goes under the knife he will be out for six to eight weeks.

The first of this season's State of Origin matches takes place on 24 May, with the others following on 14 June and 5 July.
