Fa'asavalu played for Samoa during rugby union's World Cup |
St Helens forward Maurie Fa'asavalu has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering torn knee ligaments. The Samoan, who has been one of Saints' top performers this year, picked up the injury in their surprise 19-16 defeat at Huddersfield last Saturday.
"He will be out for four to six weeks with a tear in his posterior cruciate ligament," said coach Daniel Anderson.
"We were worried he'd done his anterior which would have ended his season, but the scan is comparatively good news."
Meanwhile, Saints are one of three Super League clubs being linked with New Zealand international forward Roy Asotasi.
Anderson, formerly in charge of the Kiwi national team, admits he would love to bring him to Knowsley Road.
Asotasi's manager Mark Rowan is thought to have spoken to the Saints board during a recent visit to England but Anderson is not optimistic about their chances of signing the Canterbury Bulldogs player.
"I've coached Roy and he's a wonderful player," Anderson said. "I've love to coach him again.
"But it's very hard to get players to leave clubs. There's a genuine loyalty
about a lot of players.
"He'll stay at the Bulldogs if they come anywhere near what he wants."
Saints will have a vacancy on their overseas quota if, as expected, centre
Jamie Lyon returns to Australia when he contract runs out at the end of the
season. "I certainly don't know that he's definitely going back," added Anderson.
"We're still in a period of limbo."
Anderson does not expect the New South Wales selectors to request the player's release for this year's State of Origin Series which gets under way later this month.
