Saints thrash Wakefield

St Helens 34-2 Wakefield

Tommy Martyn was at the heart of a stunning St Helens performance, as the Saints hammered Wakefield at a soggy Knowsley Road tonight.

The Ireland stand-off touched down twice as his side ran in six tries to condemn Wakefield's new coaching team of Shane McNally and Adrian Vowles to a second defeat in as many games.

Mike Bennett, Sean Hoppe, Anthony Stewart and Martin Gleeson were the other try scorers.

Tommy Martyn was outstanding. When he retires he'll probably have to play touch football to keep him going.

Sean Long, kicking for the first time since recovering from a broken hand last month, added five goals.

After a quiet opening, Saints ultimately decided the way the game would go with three tries in seven minutes.

Martyn showed quick feet to cut inside and send second row Bennett over by the posts for the opener in the 19th minute.

Kiwi winger Hoppe then showed Saints fans what they will miss next season when he touched down the second in the corner.

Martyn then gave the home side clear breathing space as he raced through to meet Long's grubber kick and kicked forward and gathered to cross after lucky deflection off the posts.

Trinity were reduced to 12 men when an offside Martin Moana carelessly handled the ball to break up a Saints attack.

The visitors however managed to survive their period of numerical deficiency and reduced the deficit when Ian Knott landed their only points with penalty in the last minute of the first half.

After surviving Wakefield pressure at the start of the second half, Saints responded by extending their advantage with a fourth try.

Paul Newlove sent Stewart dashing over in the left corner before Martyn put the result beyond any doubt by sliding onto another clever Long kick to add another four points under the posts.

Cunningham, skipper for the night as Paul Sculthorpe took a well-earned rest, created try number six with a powerful break that left substitute Gleeson with a simple run to the line.

Long failed to convert for the first time, but by then Wakefield were well beaten.
