Cullen knows his side still need to work hard if they are to improve

Widnes coach Paul Cullen admits his team needed fresh legs as they defeated York 44-18 on Saturday to book a place in the Northern Rail Cup semi-finals.

Cullen made four substitutions at the same time in the second half which gave his team a stranglehold on the game.

"Making four substitutions all in one go is something I've not done before," Cullen told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"But it worked and it knocked us back on track. We went right back up the middle and blew them off the park."

Cullen continued: "It [making the changes] was about getting a message to my team to go right up the middle.

"It just redirected the team. We've got problems when we drift away from what we've trained and what we've played at.

"We're not good enough yet to be scorching out wide. We've just got to be patient and be a little more honest and roll our sleeves up and do some rough and tough stuff in the middle."

Widnes now face Featherstone in the Championship on Saturday, 13 June at the Stobart Stadium, as they attempt to get their league campaign back on track.
