Miley will be a medal prospect at this year's Commonwealth Games
Hannah Miley claimed her second title, and fourth medal, at the Scottish Championships in Glasgow with an impressive win in the 200m backstroke. The Garioch 23-year-old clocked 2:13.75 to win by over four lengths, more than a second ahead of Georgia Hohmann. Miley won the 200m individual medley earlier this week and was second in the 200m freestyle and 200m breaststroke. Andrew Mayor picked up his second title, and third medal, of the week when he won the 200m butterfly. The 24-year-old was a clear winner in 53.79, almost two seconds ahead of Cameron Brodie in second. Kerry Buchan added the 200m breaststroke title to the 100m gold she won earlier this week, touching in 1:10.21. Ryan Bennett claimed the 100m backstroke (55.99), Georgina Heyn won the 50m freestyle (26.05) and Ross Clark took the 50m breaststroke (28.93). Danielle Stirrat secured the 400m freestyle title (4:17.64), Katie Avramova triumphed in the 50m backstroke (29.40) and William Purnell won the 200m individual medley (2:03.43). | My backstroke has started to click again and I was happy with the way it felt and now hopefully I can progress on it and make it faster |
Speaking at the competition which doubles as Scottish trials for the Commonwealth Games in India in October, Miley said: "I'm relieved to have won that. "The 200m backstroke is the one event I have been struggling to improve on and it's still about a second out from the time I did last year but it's felt so much better recently. "I'm a little bit gutted I was just outside the Commonwealth Games qualification time but I'm pleased with the way it went because it was a solid swim and I felt it was a controlled swim. "Overall I can't complain because it's been a tough week. My backstroke has started to click again and I was happy with the way it felt and now hopefully I can progress on it and make it faster in the future." Miley will compete in the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley on Sunday, the final day of the meeting at Tollcross. The 50m freestyle saw Sara Hamilton secure a silver medal with 26.24 but the 15-year-old was disappointed to miss out on a qualification time for Delhi. "I'm gutted because I haven't made my PB (personal best) since March of last year and I was hoping to improve it here but I suppose that's what happens sometimes," said the South Aberdeenshire swimmer. "I medalled in the Commonwealth Youth Games two years ago which was a great experience, so I'm gutted not to have posted a time to qualify for the Games in Delhi. "My training has been going really well and I'm just starting to re-train my stroke so I think that's part of the reason I'm not going as fast as I could. Hopefully once it's all flowing well I'll be able to go faster again." The 50m backstroke witnessed a new Scottish record by Emma Hunter taking silver with 30.19, just behind English swimmer Avramova.
