Gilchrist powered home to win the 100m breaststroke final |
Kristopher Gilchrist claimed gold in the 100m breaststroke at the Scottish National Championships. The 26-year-old Olympian touched home in 1:02.31 to squeeze in ahead of Edinburgh University team-mate Michael Jamieson into second place. In the women's 200m breaststroke final Kerry Buchan edged out individual medley specialist Hannah Miley. England's Jo Jackson won the 100m freestyle from 15-year-old South Aberdeen swimmer Sara Hamilton. The meeting at Tollcross, Glasgow, also doubles as Commonwealth qualifying for the Scots, while there are a number of strong guest swimmers. Speaking after his race, Gilchrist, who was at the 2008 Olympics, said: "I haven't been training too hard for this meet. I posted the times I needed to in March, so I came here wanting to do the qualifying times. "I just missed it in the 100m so I was a bit disappointed. I swam about half a second faster last week in France so I was expecting to go a little bit faster. It's two strong competitions in a row and I'm still in reasonably heavy training." Jamieson added: "My time was a bit slower than what I was looking for to be honest, but we didn't rest at all this week, it's been non-stop. "I managed to get the qualify time at the British Gas Championships in March so I'm really chuffed; it's brilliant and I can't wait to get there and fly the saltire. I'm giving the British Nationals a miss to focus on solidifying my position in the team and preparing for Delhi." Welsh teenager Georgia Davies prevailed in the 100m backstroke, with Scotland's Emma Hunter in third and Miley fifth, in what is her weakest discipline.
