Rebecca Adlington powers away from Hannah Miley

The action gets underway at Tollcross pool, Glasgow
The event doubles as Commonwealth Games qualifying for Scots

Rebecca Adlington laid down a strong marker for the European Championships and Commonwealth Games by storming home in the Scottish 200m freestyle final.

Swimming as a guest at the event, which will be used as Commonwealth qualifying for the Scots, Adlington saw off Hannah Miley in a time of 1:59.45.

Miley later claimed gold in the 200m individual medley in Glasgow.

In the men's 400m freestyle, David Carry led from start to finish to beat Andy Hunter and Jonathon Greig.

The Aberdonian, who collected two golds at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, won in 3:50.73, well ahead of the Stirling-based duo.

"I'm feeling really thrilled to be as quick as I was; it was very similar to what I did in the trials three months ago now," said a delighted Carry.

"I came here without tapering down too much. I'm swimming really well and feel in great shape, this is a massive boost for me.

"It's really starting to work now and I have been concentrating on my turns over the last few weeks, as it's always been the thing that let me down. Fingers crossed I've finally cracked it now."

The men's 200m butterfly was won by City of Newcastle's Andrew Mayor in 2:00.64.

Reflecting on her loss to double Olympic champion Adlington, Miley, from Garioch, said: "I'm not quite rested into it, it's been really tough, racing hard.

"I've got my head down, I'm making sure I'm focusing on the Europeans and I'm also still working on a lot of my skills and technique".

England's Joanne Jackson, whose health problems have decimated her season, finished third behind Adlington and Miley.
