Goodison won gold in the Laser Class at the Beijing Olympics |
Paul Goodison struck gold as British sailors picked up five medals in the fourth leg of the ISAF World Cup. The 31-year-old finished third in the 10-boat medal race in Hyeres, France, to capture the gold 19 points ahead of Russia's Maxim Semerkhanov. Nick Thompson was fourth to end his regatta in sixth place overall. "It's nice to be back sailing again," he said. "I've not sailed much in the light wind so it was quite reassuring to be performing in those conditions." In the heavyweight Finn class, Ed Wright picked up silver - his fourth podium finish in five years at this regatta, and his third consecutive World Cup medal. Bryony Shaw's late form continued in the RS:X women's windsurfing event. After jumping into the podium spots just in time for the medal race, she held on to the silver medal position thanks to a second on the water and finished just two points behind the Chinese winner Chen Peina. Development squad duo John Gimson and Ed Greig also scored a silver in the Star keelboat class, with Athens bronze medallist Nick Dempsey rounding off the Skandia Team GBR medal haul with a bronze in the RS:X men's event. RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park praised his team's overall performance after a testing week. "Hyeres is always one of the most competitive World Cup events of the year, so to be able to come away with five medals and number of other good top five performances gives us the confidence that the programmes are on track," he said.
