Hole in ice halts Belfast Giants game against Edinburgh

Staff at the Odyssey Arena tried to repair the surface
Staff at the Odyssey Arena tried to repair the surface but the Belfast Giants v Edinburgh Capitals match had to be abandoned

A hole in the ice caused the Belfast Giants' Elite League game against Edinburgh Capitals to be halted with two seconds of the second period left.

The Giants were leading 1-0 at the Odyssey Arena thanks to a first-minute goal by Colin Shields.

Play was stopped for a period as an attempt was made to fix the problem but the game was eventually called off even though both sides wanted to continue.

It is unclear which team will be awarded the points for the game.

Alternatively the match could be replayed.

The Giants are still in contention for the title after Coventry Blaze lost to Hull Stingrays on Saturday night.

The Giants play Coventry on Sunday in a crucial game.
