Newcastle Vipers have signed Bakersfield Condors defenceman Ryan Mahrle to their roster for the 2009-10 Elite League season.

Mahrle, 24, is the fourth East Coast Hockey League import to arrive on Tyneside this summer and is excited by the prospect of British ice hockey.

"After a couple of years in the ECHL I was looking for a change, and a new challenge," he said.

"Playing in the UK with the Vipers is just what I was looking for."

Mahrle is joined at the Arena by forward duo Jason Tejchma and Mike Berry who were signed from ECHL side Mississippi Sea Wolves in May, and Todd Griffith who also announced his return to Newcastle after a spell with Johnstown Chiefs.

Coach Rob Wilson had previously targeted strengthening his defence and believes Mahrle represents good business for the club.

"Ryan is exactly what we're looking for in our blueliners this year," said Wilson.

"He skates very well and can carry the puck into the play and join in offensively.

"I have had very good reports from other players and coaches I've talked to, and I feel Ryan is a better prospect than the D-men who came into the League last year from the ECHL.

"At 24 he is coming into his prime so we hope to benefit from his abilities this season."

Mahrle is getting married at the beginning of September and will arrive on Tyneside shortly after.
