Nottingham Panthers will face Manchester in the Elite League play-off quarter-finals after defeat in their final league game to Cardiff.
Panthers had a chance to steal a second-place finish as Coventry lost in Newcastle, but went down 3-0 in Wales.
Captain Danny Meyers told BBC Radio Nottingham: "It's a disappointment to finish third especially as we'd heard second place was up for grabs.
"We conceded two quick goals on the penalty kill and had an uphill task."
Matt Elich, Mike Prpich and Brad Voth scored the Devils' goals in a bruising game as Panthers were shut out in Wales for the second time this season.
Panthers now face a two-legged quarter-final against Manchester next weekend, with the home leg in Nottingham on Saturday and the return in Manchester the next day.
Meyers added: "With the first game in our rink we definitely have to stamp our authority and hopefully get a lead.
"Manchester's rink is a lot like Cardiff's rink and is very small. They have some physical players and I have no doubt (Brett) Cloutier will play a big role in their team."
