Geezer too good at Goodwood

The Geezer cruised to an impressive victory in the ABN Amro Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Trainer David Elsworth, who enjoyed great days at the meeting with Persian Punch, may now aim the horse at the St Leger in September.

The Geezer was a big disappointment in the Epsom Derby but has won since and confirmed his class with a dominant display in the race, formerly known as the Gordon Stakes.

First Row made the running to the turn when favourite Unfurled took over in front.

The Geezer came to join him and when jockey Richard Quinn asked him to quicken with two-and-a-half furlongs to go, his mount went clear in fine style to win by five lengths.

He was returned at 3-1 with Unfurled, the 7-4 favourite, managing to hold off the challenge of Brahminy Kite to finish second.

Elsworth said: "I'm sure this ground has helped him today. I hoped he'd win, but he was quite good today.

"He got this mile-and-a-half well so I guess another furlong or two (in the St Leger) shouldn't be a problem. It will be tougher at Doncaster, I'm sure.

"We might take in the Great Voltigeur at York first."

In the following race, the Betfair Cup Lennox Stakes, Court Masterpiece got up inside the final furlong to edge out Jack Sullivan in a photo finish.

Jack Sullivan, a 33-1 chance, took over the running three out and it took a determined challenge from Court Masterpiece to claim victory at odds of 4-1, with Majors Cast third.

Court Masterpiece, trained by Ed Dunlop, was a nine-length winner at the track earlier in the season, but jockey Philip Robinson got home by a short head on this occasion.

Autumn Glory, the well-backed 11-4 favourite, was next to last with Vortex bringing up the rear.

Dunlop said that he was delighted with the horse, who won the Totesport International at Ascot in 2004.

"I'm really pleased for the horse - he's won a Group race now and it will mean a lot to him in the future," he said.

"He loves it here. He seems to be getting better with age and he liked the ground."
