Frankie Dettori steered Ancient World to victory in the William Hill Mile at Goodwood. The Godolphin stable rarely run their horses in handicap races, and Dettori's mount justified his position as 9-2 favourite.
In a rough race, with plenty of bumping, Ancient World sped clear of Impeller, with Tuning Fork in third and El Coto fourth.
Another jockey celebrating was Jimmy Fortune, who claimed a 109-1 treble to put him ahead in the race to be the meeting's top rider.
Ancient World, who defied top weight of 9st 10lb in the 100,000 feature race, hit the front a furlong out and won by a length and a quarter.
Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "That was very good, a classy performance.
"Frankie gave him a super ride. He broke from the gates well, just had him sitting a few lengths off the pace in the box seat, and never looked like getting beat.
"He's always been a difficult horse and always managed to get himself worked up before his races, and we felt that has worked against him in his previous two starts.
"Subsequently he has been gelded and is all the better for it."
In the Richmond Stakes, Montgomery's Arch (13-2) gave Fortune his second win of the day when getting back up close home to deny Dettori on Mystical Land.
Fortune, who is back in action after a 10-month spell on the sidelines with a back injury, went on to complete a treble with victory on Jonquil (7-2) in the EBF Trundle Maiden Stakes.
He also claimed the opening Glorious Stakes with favourite Alkaased (11-4).
