Racewatch: Day One

All the action from the opening day of the Glorious Goodwood festival.

The Godolphin-owned 16-1 rank outsider Byron upset the odds when he won the feature race, the Betfair Cup.

1735 Darnley Stakes (1m)

1. Pango (L Fletcher) 5-1 Joint Fav
2. Ringsider (TP Queally) 16-1
3. Highland Reel (T Quinn) 20-1
19 ran. Dist: , shd

Pango made it three career wins over a mile, despite a growing opinion that he is better suited to the shorter 7f distance.

The three-year-old Ringsider put in a season-best performance to take second, while the David Elsworth-trained Highland Reel exceeded expectations to finish third.

1700 Evening Standard EBF Maiden Stakes (6f)

1. Doctor's Cave (S Sanders) 50-1
2. Rajwa (F Dettori) Evens Fav
3. McEldowney (K Dalgleish) 6-1
10 ran. Dist: nk, 2

Jockey Seb Sanders completed a 561-1 double when he steered the Clive Brittain-trained Doctor's Cave to victory in the penultimate race.

Sanders, who kicked off Glorious Goodwood with a win in the opener on Coat of Honour, ensured the first-day trend of outsiders upsetting the formbook continued with a gutsy ride.

The pundits and bookies had predicted the task would be too much for Doctor's Cave, but he clearly relished the good going and muscled through to just deny the heavily-backed Rajwa and 6-1 shot McEldowney.

1625 Tatler Summer Season Stakes (1m 6f)

1. Mephisto (D Holland) 7-2 fav
2. Sergeant Cecil (J Fortune) 16-1
3. Jagger (E Ahern) 9-2
15 ran. Dist: ,

The lightly-raced five-year-old Mephisto came off best in a tight finish to make it three wins in his last three outings.

Darryll Holland brought home the favourite, trained by Luca Cumani, for a half-length triumph.

1550 Betfair Molecomb Stakes (5f)

1. Tournedos ((TE Durcan) 14-1
2. Mary Read (F Lynch) 25-1
3. Safari Sunset (P Doe) 66-1
13 ran. Dist: Nk, 2

Tournedos ended a frustrating run of near-misses for trainer Mick Channon with victory in this Group 3 sprint.

The youngster had tasted defeat in his last two outings, but jockey Ted Durcan made sure there was no disappointment this time around.

With two furlongs to go he came right around the field to collar challenger Mary Read by a neck, while rank outsider Safari Sunset made a late surge for third.

1515 Betfair Cup (7f)

1. Byron (K McEvoy) 16-1
2. Suggestive (M Hills) 25-1
3. Kheleyf (F Dettori) 9-4 fav
8 ran. Dist: ,

Godolphin second-stringer Byron upset the odds when he beat better-fancied stablemate Kheleyf to victory in the main race of the day.

Front-running specialist Naahy adopted his customary place at the head of the field from the off.

But Kerrin McEvoy's mount, a 16-1 chance, swept clear a furlong out and easily held off the challenge of Suggestive and the Dettori-ridden pre-race favourite Kheleyf.

1440 ABN Amro Stakes (1m 4f)

1. Maraahel (R Hills) 9-4
2. Go For Gold (K Fallon) 25-1
3. Remaadd (Martin Dwyer) 5-1
8 ran. Dist: 1, 1

Useful three-year-old Maraahel travelled well in his first taste of Group company to hand trainer Sir Michael Stoute a clear-cut win in the second race of the day.

The 9-4 second favourite was settled in mid-division by Richard Hills and lengthened well entering the final two furlongs to score by a length-and-a-half.

The Group Three race is a recognised trial for the St Leger and Maraahel subsequently earned a top quote of 8-1 from Ladbrokes and Victor Chandler to hand Stoute his first success in the oldest Classic.

Kieren Fallon on Go for Gold cut through the pack to take second, while Adian O'Brien's Remaadd finished third.

But there was more disappointment for Dettori as his Duke of Venice, the 13-8 favourite, past the post unplaced and consequently slipped to 12-1 in the Leger betting.

1405 Sterling Insurance Summer Handicap (1m 2f)

1. Coat of Honour (S Sanders) 10-1
2. Impeller (S Drowne) 9-1
3. Bonecrusher (TP Queally) 25-1
15 ran. Dist: Nk,

The fast-improving Coat of Honour won well by half-a-length to ensure Sir Mark Prescott's stable kicked off the meeting in the best possible style.

Always handy under Seb Sanders, the 10-1 shot went past the front-running Telemachus at the three-furlong pole to come home a neck in front of Impeller, with the quick-finishing Bonecrusher a further half-length away in third.

The 9-2 favourite Fantastic Love, ridden by Frankie Dettori, was close to the pace until the closing stages when he slide down the order.
