Song Qingling scored the fourth in China's rout |
England's campaign in the Women's Champions Trophy came to a brutal end as they were demolished 7-0 by China in the fifth-place play-off. The Olympic silver medallists struck after two minutes as Li Hongxia scored. With a 3-0 half-time lead, China pressed home their superiority to avoid a defeat that would have relegated them to the second-tier Champions Challenge. In the final, Argentina retained the trophy with a hard-fought 4-3 penalty shootout win over Australia. "China were awesome in front of goal. Their first chance came within two minutes and bang, goal," said England coach Danny Kerry. | 606: DEBATE |
"It's not like we didn't know about their ability to counter-attack but their counter-attack is incredible." England had already suffered a 4-1 loss to the same opponents the previous day in the final phase of the group stage. Jersey's Becky Herbert scored England's goal - her second of the tournament. She told BBC Jersey: "It's good to get on the scoresheet as my scoring record is an area I am really targeting for improvement. "Getting a goal's great but it's disappointing it didn't help us against China." Kerry's side are qualified as hosts for the next edition of the tournament that will be held in Nottingham in 2010.
