England were denied victory over Olympic gold medalists Netherlands after a late strike saw them draw 2-2 in the women's Champions Trophy.

Katie Long and Alexandra Danson had put England 2-0 up in Sydney.

But Marilyn Agliotti pulled one back before Maartje Paumen flicked a shot under the crossbar in the final play of the game to earn Netherlands a draw.

"I'm gutted about drawing in the dying minutes when we were two goals up," said England captain Kate Walsh.

Defending champions Argentina beat China 2-1 and hosts Australia overcame Germany 2-0 in the other matches on the opening day of the six-team tournament.

"In our first game at a major tournament together, we wanted to play good hockey and get a result," said Australia's Madonna Blyth.

"The biggest thing we will take out of it is definitely the confidence going forward, knowing that not only can we match it with the top teams but also beat them."
