Norfolk clinches world top spot

Paralympic champion Peter Norfolk secured the year-end number one spot after regaining his quad singles title at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters.

The 48-year-old from Hampshire beat world number one David Wagner 6-2 7-5 to take over from the American at the top of the rankings.

Norfolk had also beaten Wagner in the round-robin stage earlier in the week.

"I'm delighted to have won this title and to regain the world number one spot makes it more special," he said.

The Briton, who missed last year's event following the birth of his son, was in imperious form in Amsterdam to win his second Masters title in four years.

He won his three pool games against Wagner, Paralympic silver medallist Johan Andersson and Nick Taylor of the USA in straight sets.

He made a strong start to Saturday's final, going 2-0 up and although Wagner broke straight back, Norfolk quickly went ahead again and forced his opponent into making errors as he wrapped up the opening set.

But Wagner responded in the second set as both players produced some exciting tennis.

Norfolk produced a cross-court winner to move 6-5 ahead and he hit four winners in the final game, sealing victory with a forehand winner to finish the year as world number one for the fifth time in seven seasons.
