Weir will be among the favourites for gold in Osaka |
British wheelchair racers Dave Weir and Shelly Woods have qualified for their respective 1500m races at next month's World Athletics Championships in Japan. The pair both advanced from the semi-finals which were held as part of the Boiling Point Classic track event in Windsor, Canada.
Fellow Briton Brian Alldis narrowly missed out on a place in the men's final after finishing ninth overall.
Only the top eight finishers qualified for the exhibition races in Osaka.
Weir, the world record holder over the distance, won his heat in three minutes 14.18 seconds, well outside his record, in what was a tactical encounter, while Alldis was fifth in his heat, which was the fastest of the three, in 3:14.47.
Woods was fourth in her heat in 3:37.25 and will be up against the likes of Canadian duo Chantal Petitclerc and Diane Roy and American Tatyana McFadden in Japan.
