Weir enjoys a fierce rivalry with Australian Fearnley

The 28-year-old set a new world best in the heats of the T54 1500m, clocking two minutes 55.72 seconds to beat the previous mark of 2:56.61.

He then became the first athlete to break the 10-minute barrier for the 5,000m with a time of 9:54.82.

It knocked almost six seconds off Saul Mendoza's record of 10:01.47.

Weir was in a good position throughout the race and dug deep in the home straight to snatch victory from his Australian rival Kurt Fearnley by the smallest of margins.

A total of six athletes finished under 10 minutes in a thrilling contest.

Weir also claimed victory in the 400 and 800m.

Shelly Woods beat the old world record in the women's 5,000m but was edged into third place by American Amanda McGrory and Canada's Diane Roy. However, her time of 11:40.27 is a new British and European record.

There was also a notable victory for Anne Wafula Strike in the T54 100m and she went on to finish second in the T54 200m at the US Track and Field Championships later in the weekend.
