Taylor faces second-placed Gary Anderson in Liverpool in his next match |
Phil Taylor celebrated his 100th Premier League appearance with an 8-3 victory over world champion Adrian Lewis in Birmingham on Thursday. Taylor lost 8-2 to Lewis on the opening night of the competition in London, but made it 10 consecutive wins since that defeat with another clinical display. "I'm happy to have got revenge over Adrian," said the 50-year-old, who is already through to the last four. "It was important to win tonight even though I'm in the play-offs." The 15-times world champion, from Stoke-on-Trent, continued: "It keeps the other players on their toes and I won't be taking my foot off the pedal. "Adrian's a gutsy player and showed that he's a worthy world champion by trying his hardest with every shot." Taylor remains four points clear at the top of the Premier League, while Lewis is one point away from a place in the play-offs at Wembley in May. "Phil didn't miss a thing and played brilliantly," said Lewis, who averaged almost 101 in defeat. "At 4-1 down I was averaging 119, but Phil took out 139 when I was on a double and another good finish when I was on a double. "Some of the other results went for me tonight but I've got to play Simon Whitlock next week and that's a massive match for me now if I'm going to make the play-offs." Gary Anderson set a new Premier League record, hitting 11 maximums in his 8-6 win over Simon Whitlock, to stay second in the table and meets Taylor in Liverpool in his next match. Raymond van Barneveld and Terry Jenkins drew 7-7 in an entertaining encounter, while James Wade inflicted another heavy defeat on Mark Webster, eventually prevailing 8-1.
