Lloyd is bidding to win his second major title |
World number one Colin Lloyd will meet former world champion John Part in the final of the Stan James World Matchplay in Blackpool. Lloyd put in a late surge to defeat "Rocket" Ronnie Baxter 17-13, while Part came through 18-16 against Peter Manley, having led 14-9.
Lloyd found another gear against Baxter when the players were tied at 10 apiece and built up a 15-11 lead.
Part missed a number of match-winning chances but eventually took advantage.
"I was worried. I would be lying if I said wasn't," said Part, who ended Phil Taylor's quest for the Grand Slam in the quarter-finals.
"I would feel foolish to have defeated Phil and lose the next round, so I did have that pressure on myself.
"I certainly didn't want to lose this match or the final after beating Phil."
Lloyd wasted two opportunities to close out his match against Baxer, but hit double five when presented with another chance in the 31st leg.
"Before there were four great players in contention - but I can look forward to the final now," said Lloyd.
"I am just over the moon with that victory because Ronnie is a tough opponent. I just knew I had to be on my game."
