Taylor's Grand Slam bid thwarted
Phil Taylor
Taylor had not been beaten in this tournament for five years
Phil Taylor's quest for the Grand Slam was thwarted as he was beaten 16-11 by John Part in the quarter-finals of the Stan James World Matchplay.

The Canadian trailed 4-1 early on but by the next break the players were tied at five legs apiece.

But Part produced a late surge to open up a four-leg lead, and he closed out a famous victory with double one.

Taylor had already won this year's World Championship, Premier League, UK Open and Las Vegas Desert Classic.

Peter Manley staged a superb fightback to defeat Wayne Mardle 16-14 and set up a meeting with Part in the next round.

Manley made a bright start and nailed six out of six doubles to take a 6-4 lead into the second interval.

But Mardle fought back and sure to reach the semi-finals when he took out a 141 check-out on his way to a commanding 14-9 lead.

However, Manley reeled off five legs to level and then closed out a thrilling match with double top.

"When I was 14-9 down I just tried to keep niggling away at him," said Manley.

"I'm sure Wayne's feeling a bit upset after that. But in the latter stages he didn't look like he was going to finish the game off.

"I had nothing to lose and it was a nice way to finish the game with one dart."

Ronnie Baxter
Baxter overcame an early deficit

Ronnie Baxter powered past Dennis Smith to also reach the semi-finals.

Baxter started slowly as Smith - fresh from ousting Dutchman Roland Scholten - scored heavily to open up a 5-2 lead.

But the 'Rocket' surged clear with a superb spell of darts, maintained his lead with a cool 11-darter and then clinched victory on a double 19.

"I was 5-2 down, but I pulled it back and started to relax," said Baxter, who eventually won 16-10.

"However, I was just too inconsistent and cannot afford to be the same in the semi-finals."

Baxter will next face Colin Lloyd who beat youngster Adrian Lewis 16-13.

The world number one trailed by four legs at one stage but turned on the style when it mattered most to secure the win.

Lloyd levelled the match in the 26th leg with a shot at double top and then went on to take the next three legs to wrap up victory.

"This boy was no mug - he's the real deal," said Lloyd afterwards. "But I got through, so I'm happy."
