Manley was the World Matchplay runner-up in 1999 |
Peter Manley edged out Bob Anderson 10-8 in a thrilling conclusion to the first-round matches at the Stan James World Matchplay on Tuesday. Manley raced to a 6-3 lead but Anderson decided to slow the Blackpool encounter down and took longer and longer to retrieve his arrows from the board.
Anderson's tactics almost paid off as he hit a 12-dart leg with two maximums and won another leg to level 8-8.
However, Manley fought back and broke Anderson's throw in the final leg.
After sealing his place in the second round, Manley criticised his fellow Englishman for his gamesmanship, but said he was expecting it.

"I always knew it would be that type of game against Bob," the Cumbria-based thrower said.
"That's the way he plays.
"He is a great ambassador for the game of darts but it is such a shame that he has to resort to those type of tactics.
"It affects me but he was able to hit 12-dart legs and bulls eye finishes.
"There's no rule about slow play but it really is off-putting and you could see from my reaction at the end how much of a relief it was to go through."
Meanwhile, Adrian Lewis reached the first quarter-final of his career with a sudden-death win over Denis Ovens.
After an energy-sapping 30 legs, Lewis won the all-England second-round encounter 16-14.
Ronnie Baxter also advanced when he eased past fellow Englishman Dave Askew 13-6.
