Adrian Lewis saw off Kevin Painter 10-4 to book his place in the second round of the Stan James World Matchplay. The 20-year-old opened up a 7-2 lead before Painter reduced the deficit but Lewis stepped up a gear to close out the match in Blackpool.
Mark Walsh, who reached the UK Open final last month, delivered a strong display to overcome Mick Manning 10-4.
In the last match of the evening, Denis Ovens inflicted a 10-6 defeat on former world champion Steve Beaton.
The players shared the first four legs before Ovens moved ahead at the interval and then reeled off the next three on his way to victory.
"I thought that I was playing well enough to win this one and I managed to do so," said a delighted Lewis.
"It was a bad day at the office for Kevin."
