Fakenham's Mervyn King had enoyed his best ever year in 2010 |
Norfolk's Mervyn King suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Brett Arkley in the World Indoor Bowls Championships at Hopton-on-Sea near Great Yarmouth. Despite there being 113 places between the pair in the world rankings Gateshead's Arkley secured a 6-5 7-7 win to reach the quarter-finals. World number eight King looked set to seal the first set, but Arkley took the lead in a final end shoot out. He held King in the second set to set up a match with Greg Harlow. Arkley will have to be on similar form if he is to progress past the Cambridgeshire-based world number two in their tie on Friday.
