King lifted the Scottish Open trophy at Dewars Centre, Perth
England's Mervyn King beat home hope Stewart Anderson 7-5 8-5 to lift the Scottish Open as the pressure told on the young Scot at Dewars Centre, Perth. Eighth seed King raced into a 5-0 lead against nervy Anderson, who was a wild card entry to the tournament, and led 7-1 before clinching the first set. Anderson was 3-0 ahead in the second but squandered several chances as King bounced back for a deserved victory. It will lift King to third in the world, while Anderson rises to sixth. The Englishman has been in clinical form all week and was again in devastating form, while suggesting that the final was a more scrappy affair. | Stewart is disappointed, but what a future he has in the game |
"I've been delighted with my form all week, although maybe not so much today," he told BBC Scotland. "We both struggled as the rink played differently. "Stewart is disappointed, but what a future he has in the game." The crucial moment came in the fourth end of the second set, with Anderson leading the Commonwealth Game silver-medallist 3-1. With King lying three, the Scot missed the target completely with a couple of rudimentary drives and that put the Englishman back in control. A couple of singles put Anderson back in front at 5-4, but he cut a frustrated figure as he failed to capitalise and King fought back to clinch the title. Anderson, who also lost in last season's world championship final, is hoping to continue his rise up the rankings, having stood at 78th a year ago. "That is the worst I have played all week and what a time to save it for," he said. "Merv put me under pressure and fully deserves the trophy."
