Crisis club Worcester Wolves are given December off

Basketball

Worcester Wolves have been given permission to postpone their December fixtures following the departure of head coach Chuck Evans and six players.

In a letter to supporters, Wolves managing director Roger Clarke says they are determined to bounce back.

"This sorry saga leaves no winners," he said. "But the 10 years that have been invested will not be wasted.

"The club is proud to compete in the BBL and looks forward to recommencing our season in 2010."

Wolves were forced to field a weakened squad for Sunday's 111-59 defeat at Glasgow Rocks.

And they were due to play a further five BBL matches between now and Christmas.

But they have now been given permission to take a break from competitive action while they rebuild their squad.

We are determined that we will overcome the challenge and will field a competitive team for our first game in 2010

"The club decided to take disciplinary action with the players following unauthorised strike action early last week," added Clarke.

"This followed a dispute between the players and Evans over comments made during a post-match analysis session.

"During the ongoing saga, paramount in our thoughts was protecting the club, the league and our fans whilst trying to be equitable to all individuals involved.

"We will now have to look at all of the implications involved in relaunching our season.

"We are determined that we will overcome the challenge and will field a competitive team for our first game in 2010."

The Wolves are now scheduled to resume their BBL season on Sunday 3 January when their new-look squad will head to Sheffield Sharks.
