Worcester Wolves recorded their first BBL win of the season when they beat PAWS London Capital 98-80 at University of Worcester. The Wolves head coach Chuck Evans was pleased with what had been a very solid showing by his team. "We played with lots of energy but our victory margin would have been greater if we had done better offensively. "Having said that London has some good players and last week they beat our next opponents Leicester Riders." This win on Saturday 20 October rounded off what was a far better week for the Wolves in which they had made progress in the BBL Cup with a win at Essex Pirates. They then went down by a single point in a thrilling BBL match at Everton Tigers on the Friday evening before seeing off London Capital 24 hours later. | It was down really to the Lithuanian connection of Vidmantis Uzkuraitis and Evaldas Zabas Wolves head coach Chuck Evans |
Chuck Evans said there are clear signs the squad is starting to knit together and he is hoping they have now turned a corner in their season. "This was our first win in the league this season and it was down really to the Lithuanian connection of Vidmantis Uzkuraitis and Evaldas Zabas," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester. "They were were outstanding both in our one-point loss at Everton last night and in victory tonight," he added. Both players were in the starting five and immediately scored to help the Wolves to a 10-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. Zabas finished with a game-high 25 personal points while Uzkuraitis was just one point behind him while they contributed nine three-point efforts between them and a 100% record from the free throw line. The Wolves led 35-10 at the end of the first quarter and there was to be no way back into the game for the London side, although they cut the lead to five points by half-time. Worcester again stretched away over the third quarter before closing out the game in the final stages in which Harry Disy came to life making 10 out of his 19 points. The Wolves will be looking to build on this win in their next match in which they will entertain Leicester Riders at University of Worcester on Sunday 1 November (tip off 1600 GMT).
