Guard Chapman joins Eagles squad

Joe Chapman
Chapman impressed in college basketball with Marquette University

Newcastle Eagles have signed guard Joe Chapman after the 25-year-old ended his spell with Mexican CIBACOPA league side Caballeros De Culiacan.

Chapman, a Marquette University graduate, also spent time in the Czech basketball league and managing director Paul Blake is excited by his arrival.

"Joe has enjoyed a good college career playing with some great players like Dwayne Wade," said Blake.

"It is an exciting signing for us among familiar faces we have brought back."

The Eagles have been successful in retaining the bulk of the side that romped to a treble success last season, and Chapman now joins those ranks as a newcomer to the most successful side in recent British Basketball League history.

And Blake believes the Chicago Heights-born guard can play a key role at the Arena this season.

He definitely has the all round game and firepower that Fab (Flournoy) has been looking for

"As with any new player it depends on how he fits in of course but we think he will be a great addition and his flexibility as a combo guard is important," he said.

"We had that last year with Trey (Moore) and it is something that we needed to retain."

"Having come out of a good programme and shown that he can be anything from a role player to a main guy depending on the circumstances he definitely has the all round game and firepower that Fab (Flournoy) has been looking for."
