Fab Flournoy
Flournoy has won every major team honour as Eagles coach

Newcastle Eagles player-coach Fabulous Flournoy picked up the Sports Personality Award during Monday's Sport Newcastle Dinner at the Civic Centre.

Flournoy, 35, confessed the award was "humbling" and admitted he was proud to follow in the footsteps of people such as Jonny Wilkinson and Alan Shearer.

He told BBC Radio Newcastle: "The award left me speechless and very emotional.

"I'm thankful and very appreciative and I give thanks to Paul and Sam Blake and the Eagles family and club."

Since taking over as Eagles player-coach, the New Yorker has won every honour available to him and the team in British basketball and remains one of the most successful coaches in the region.

Elsewhere Durham's cricket success over the last few seasons was rewarded with the Frank Brennan Trophy won by coach Geoff Cook.

And the Newcastle Vipers were presented with the Team/Community Award for their outreach work with young people and communities.

"Last night was a fantastic achievement and is a great reward for some fantastic work behind the scenes from the staff and players," said team manager Jamie Longmuir.

"The Vipers Community Fund has been a fantastic project which continues to grow and is an integral part of the Vipers organisation."

BBC Radio Newcastle's Young Sport Star North East award went to dressage rider Alice Thompson, 17, while there was a special award for former Newcastle United captain Bob Moncur ahead of the 40th anniversary of their 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win against Hungarian side Ujpest Dozsa.
