Newcastle swimmer Chris Cook was presented with the Sports Personality of the Year award at the Sport Newcastle dinner on Monday night. The 28-year-old from South Shields is a member of the Great Britain Olympic squad and is seen as a genuine medal hope for the Beijing games in 2008.
Cook won two gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
It is the first time Cook has won the award which he inherits from paralympian Stephen Miller.
Other winners at the dinner included Cook's coach Ian Oliver, Newcastle United youngster Kazenga LuaLua and Durham Cricket Club.
