Guernsey badminton player Elena Johnson hopes doubles partner Gayle Lloyd will be eligible to join her at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October. Lloyd is just a few months short of the five-year residency period required to represent the island. Johnson told BBC Guernsey: "It would be excellent to have a doubles partner and also a training partner out there. "Guernsey's Commonwealth Association aren't sure if she can go, but they're trying to see what they can do." Johnson's appearance in Delhi will be the third time she has represented Guernsey at the Commonwealth Games. And after a season which has seen her rise up to 12 in the English rankings, and win the Guernsey Badminton Open by beatinng France's Enora Villard in the final, she is in confident mood. | It's hard to have any expectations before I've seen the draw |
She said: "The season's just finished for me so I've got through all of my tournaments and am just starting on my physical training now. "Over the last couple of years I've been just outside the top 20 in the world, so this season, with the Commonwealths in mind, I've been trying to get my ranking up as high as possible. "Probably the best result I've had this season was winning the Guernsey Open, which was a really strong field." As for the competition once she gets to Delhi, Johnson knows she will have to be at her very best to progress through the rounds. She said: "Malaysia are always going to be incredibly tough and India and England are also very strong, so it's hard to have any expectations before I've seen the draw. "But I won't be the weakest person there, so I'll just do what I can do."
