Cann is looking for her fourth title in Manchester |
Jersey's Elizabeth Cann says she is ready to prove herself at the English National Badminton Championships. The 31-year-old is the only player in the draw who has won the title before. The four-time champion told BBC Jersey: "I still want to be number one in the country, and winning the nationals is one sure way to prove it." Top seed Cann has a bye in the first round, and will meet either Steffi Clark from Yorkshire or Hertfordshire's Helena Lewczynska. | It's definitely a main aim of mine. I hope to be representing Great Britain there [London 2012]. |
Despite her three previous victories in the women's singles, Cann lost out in the final last year, going down 27-25 in the final game to Jill Pittard. "It still means a lot to me to win it. I was very disappointed not to win it last year," said Cann. A commonwealth medal is Delhi is her other major aim for this year, after coming so close four years ago, narrowly losing the play-off for bronze. Cann said: "I am so determined to get a medal this time. There are a lot of good players around, many of them will have improved from last time, so I have to be as focused as possible and train as hard as I can between now and then." Cann is also looking ahead to the London Olympics in 2012. She added: "It's definitely a main aim of mine. I hope to be representing Great Britain there." The English National Championships start in Manchester on Friday, 5 February.
