Olver won the Australian International earlier this year |
Anthony Clark and Heather Olver began their new partnership with a three-set win over Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Kostiuczyk in the Malaysia Open. European mixed doubles champion Clark teamed up with Olver last month after Donna Kellogg's retirement. The new pair trailed 20-18 in the first game and saved three game points before winning it 23-21, lost the second 21-12 but claimed the decider 21-16. In the men's single, Andrew Smith beat Carl Baxter in an all-English contest. Olver, 23, a Bath University graduate, teamed with Mariana Agathangelou to win the women's doubles at the Irish International earlier in January. The Eastbourne-born player was also runner-up at the Swedish International with Rob Adcock in January. The new combination will next face Clark's men's doubles partner Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork, who won their first-round match against Hong Kong's Wong Wai Hong and Chau Hoi Wah 21-15 21-12. | 606: DEBATE |
England's other mixed pair Chris Adcock and Gabby White fell at the first hurdle when they were beaten 17-21 21-16 21-19 by sixth seeds Songphon Anugritayawon and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand. White atoned in the women's doubles when she and Wallwork reached the second round, beating qualifiers Chan Tsz Ka and Chau Hoi Wah 22-20 17-21 21-14. In the evening session, Smith met Avon's Baxter and the world number 29 from Hampshire booked his place in the second round with a 21-16 21-16 win. He increased the pressure in the second half of each game after Baxter matched him at 11-11 each time and now faces Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana. Two-time English National champion Rajiv Ouseph had a formidable draw against top seed Lee Chong Wei and slid to a 21-14 21-4 defeat.
