Kellogg represented Great Britain at three Olympics
European mixed doubles champion Donna Kellogg is to retire from top-class badminton at the end of 2009. Kellogg's final tournament is expected to be the World Super Series Masters Finals in Malaysia in early December. "I decided some time ago the end of the year was probably the right time to stop," said the 31-year-old three-time European champion, from Derby. "I have had a brilliant career and I am proud of all the medals and titles I have won." In a 12-year career Kellogg represented Great Britain at three Olympic Games, from Sydney 2000 to Beijing 2008, and specialised in the doubles, her last major success coming alongside Anthony Clark in the 2008 European mixed doubles. | Donna has played a significant role in raising the profile of our sport here Adrian Christy Badminton England |
She won two European women's doubles titles, with Joanne Goode in 2000 and Gail Emms in 2006, and took mixed doubles world silver with Clark in the same year. In addition, she was twice a gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games, in 1998 and 2002. Kellogg paid tribute to her various doubles partners, adding: "Since Gail Emms retired last year I have been able to focus solely on mixed doubles, and Anthony and I have enjoyed this year and had some good wins. "I would also like to thank all the other people who have given me so much support and guidance throughout my career. "I am looking forward to a new life with fresh challenges and spending more time with family and friends." | 606: DEBATE |
Adrian Christy, Chief Executive of Badminton England, said Kellogg had been an "outstanding ambassador for badminton" while competing for England and Great Britain. "We fully respect Donna's decision and know that whatever the future holds it will bring her great success. I wish her well in the future," said Christy. "She has played a significant role in raising the profile of our sport in this country and internationally. "I very much hope she will continue to be involved in badminton in some way - she has far too much to offer."
