St Ives teenager Tassy Swallow has won the Women's Open competition at the Animal Open Surf contest held on Fistral Beach, Newquay.

The 16-year-old held off competition from Freshwater's Jo Dennison on Sunday in three to four foot waves.

Head judge Esther Spears said: "This is a promising time for British surfing."

In the Open event, Reubin Pearce from South Africa took the top spot and got the highest scoring wave with an 8.7, with Newquay's Mark Harris third.

Pearce said: "I am over the moon to have won this event, after having no win all year, I'm stoked.

"I surfed as hard as I could and came out with a win so I am really happy it paid off."
