A stunning strike by teenage forward Dale Jennings sealed victory for Tranmere against Plymouth.
The 17-year-old slotted the ball past Romain Larrieu after easily dribbling through the Plymouth defence.
The away side should have taken the lead early on but Peter Gulacsi blocked a Bradley Wright-Phillips effort.
Tranmere captain John Welsh cleared Reda Johnson's header off the line and Gulacsi made a superb save from Craig Noone late on.
Plymouth Argyle manager Peter Reid told BBC Radio Devon: "How we haven't got a goal in the last couple of minutes I really don't know.
"We've had numerous really good chances and we haven't stuck them away - their keeper made some really good saves, and they defended desperately, but from those situations you hope to get one in the back of the net.
"I thought we were dangerous and we always looked dangerous, but if you don't stick it in the back of the net then you're going to struggle."
