Jersey's Josh le Marquand has won the European Junior Longboard Championships in Portugal. The 17-year-old beat Issak Lawton, Lucien Leray and Alberto Fernades in the final at Arda Beach, Viana. Le Marquand's triumph came courtesy of a stunning 6.33 score on his fifth wave in the final, which helped him to a total of 10.83. Coach Dan Harris said: "I am so pleased for Josh. He put in loads of training before the event and kept focused." The Jersey youngster was in Portugal competing alongside seven other surfers from the Channel Islands. And Harris said all of the Island's representatives did themselves proud. He said: "The club have brought down a young inexperienced team this year as many of the regular surfers are taking GCSEs. "Full credit to Ben Bates in the under-14s and Josh Evans in the under-16s who both reached round four in their first European Championship. "Hayden Bishop, Nathan Elms, Chantelle Coote and Meagan Jones all surfed well under extreme pressure." Le Marquand becomes Jersey's second European Longboard Champion, following in the footsteps of Ben Skinner who won the Senior European Championships in September 2009.
