Lack of swell causes disruption

Surfers await new swell at European Championships

Organisers are hoping the 2009 European Surfing Championships will resume at St Ouen's beach on Thursday.

Competition was cancelled on Wednesday because of a lack of swell.

Hundreds of competitors from across the continent are in Jersey for the annual championships and are hoping conditions soon improve.

Jersey Surfboard Club president Dave Ferguson told BBC Jersey: "It's flat today, but we should get in the water late this afternoon on the push."

The forecast is for one to two feet of swell, leaving the organisers hopeful of getting in a few heats.

Ferguson added: "It will leave us with about 15 hours of surfing to do, but as the competition runs until Sunday we should be able to do it."

The Championships continue until Sunday, 4 October.
