Gould new Channel Island champion

Jersey Surfboard Club
Gould beat last year's champion Scott Eastwood

Jersey's Renny Gould won the Deloitte Channel Island Surfing Championships in testing 3-4ft on-shore conditions at St Ouen on Sunday.

Gould defeated 2008 champion Scott Eastwood as well as Sam George and Mark Dubano in the final.

All four were using the competition as preparation for next month's European Championships being held in Jersey.

Jersey Surfboard Club president Dave Ferguson was pleased with the standard of the surf over the weekend.

He told BBC Radio Jersey: "Absolutely brilliant this weekend, a good swell on Saturday that continued through to today; everybody surfed out of their skin, really good show - it's looking good for next month's Euros."

In the other divisions Matt Chapman retained his junior boys title, while Abbi Hughes won the girls and Josh Evans won the grommets.

Shelly McFarlane won the women's, Jonny Carden claimed the masters, Andre Le Geyt (pron jet) won the long-board and Ben Chapman claimed the seniors.

The 2009 European Championships will be held at St Ouen's Bay from 26 September until 4 October.
