Jersey defeated Guernsey to retain the title |
Jersey retained the Ernst & Young Touch Rugby Inter Insular Trophy in horrendous weather conditions at St Clement on Saturday. In a close first game, Jersey scored early in the first half and were unable to penetrate the Guernsey defence again until the last play of the match. Guernsey evened the tie, winning the ladies match 4-3. Jersey were slow to warm up and Guernsey capitalised to go to a quick 3-0 lead. In the second half, Jersey played with more consistency in attack and scored three times. However Guernsey also added another to take the tie. In the deciding tie, the Jersey mixed team came out hard and fast scoring two early tries. After the initial burst, the game then settled down with both teams creating opportunities to score. Jersey's well rehearsed moves from several months of training paid off and they were always in control of the game. Guernsey did manage to get through the tight Jersey defence twice but Jersey replied twofold each time and the match ended with a resounding 6-2 win for Jersey.
