It is the second successive year that Jersey have lost in the quarter-finals |
Jersey hockey club are out of the National Trophy after losing a penalty shootout 3-2 to Didsbury Northern in their quarter-final on Sunday. "It's a difficult way to end a game - neither team goes through on merit when it goes down to penalties," captain Bill Aston told BBC Radio Jersey. "First half we were under par, but in the second half we really picked it up and turned it around," he added. "We had the breaks but unfortunately we couldn't put it in the goal." Jersey trailed 1-0 at half-time but Stuart Ramskill levelled the scores early in the second half. However, their Manchester opponents soon led again, Chris Hay and Danny Hughes notching Didsbury's goals. But another Ramskill goal and one from Tom Millar clawed Jersey back to 3-3 and ensured extra time. Neither side could break the deadlock in the extra period and Jersey were undone on penalty flicks. The defeat means Jersey miss out on a possible semi-final clash with Channel Island rivals Guernsey, after they beat Worthing 7-1 in their quarter-final on Sunday. "Getting through to the quarter-finals is a major achievement and it's a good season," said Aston. "It would have been lovely to go one stage further, but we've got plenty to play for this season still."
