Smith's boat dealt well with the rough seas

Jersey powerboat driver Roy Smith has reclaimed the World Offshore Two Litre Powerboat championship and announced his retirement from the sport.

High winds meant two races had to be held on Sunday in rough water, perfect conditions for Smith's boat.

He took second place in both races to win the title, his third after winning back-to-back crowns in 2002 and 2003.

And Smith, who has been racing for 25 years, announced that the race was his last as he retires from the sport.

"I have now officially retired from powerboat racing and I am going out on a high," he told BBC Radio Jersey.

"I have been racing for 25 years and I'm going out as world champion.

"Win or lose, I was going to call it a day - my old body won't take it any more, being beaten around in a two litre boat," he added.

Bad weather meant a planned race on Saturday had to be called off, meaning two races were held in rough waters off Guernsey on Sunday.

Smith and his navigator Peter Phillipson came second in the first race to an Italian crew and knew they had to get two places in front of them in the second race to take the title.

He managed to overtake a French crew on a dramatic final lap to get the placing he needed to win the world crown.

"I hit the wash from the Condor Ferry late on and almost stopped. But we did enough to catch him," Smith said.

"I didn't dream of doing this. It was a class field with 5 ex-world champions out there today," he added.
